The week before Spring Break is upon us! To celebrate, the K team decided to jump into a country study for the week. Our classroom country is Japan! We are keeping the excitement for nonfiction rolling, by creating a class nonfiction book about Japan. On Friday we started our conversation with what we already KNOW about Japan and what we WONDER. Many of the wonders were around homes, food, clothes, animals, language and natural disasters. I am excited to share my experiences with this country and deepen their global perspectives. If your student has something special that they want to bring in and share with the class about Japan, please feel free to do so. We are sharing what we learned and learning from the other K classes on Friday. The other countries of choice are India and Argentina!
Reminders for the week:
- QAE sounders day ticket forms are due by this FRIDAY! If you did not get a green form in your student's folder, let me know!
- We have an exciting whole school theatre assembly by Bookit on Thursday. We will be watching them perform The Lorax and the Sneetches!
- Our second literacy celebration will be held this Friday morning in the QAE library. As always, these events are to showcase the amazing work these kindergarteners do everyday! Don't worry if you are unable to attend, there will be plenty of people there to celebrate your student's learning!

Our nonfiction book clubs came to an end, but that doesn't mean the learning has to stop!
This week we created posters with the facts that we learned about our topics. Each group worked together to plan their poster and presentation to the class. I let go of the reigns and gave them poster paper, the fact sheets they created, some glue/markers, a few group work strategies and said "talk it out." I realized that this is the time in the year where you need to let go and let them be the self-directed learners that I know they all are. The skills that they had to strengthen and develop in order to produce the poster with everyone's input, was more than I alone could teach in a day. We had some angry faces and some tears, but after seeing their progress we need to keep this ball rolling. Get ready kindergarteners, I am letting go of the reigns! Well, not all of them of course :)
