Readers learn from the pictures in nonfiction books!
Even if we can't read the words in some nonfiction books, we can still learn from the pictures! This week we dove into the nonfiction books in our classroom library to see what we could learn. These books were not at our just right reading level, but that definitely didn't stop us from learning a ton. They have been loving being able to share what they have learned with the class.

We have been working on Words Their Way sorts for a few months now. Some of you may have noticed checklists coming home in folders. After the students have completed one concept, they take a quiz and then move onto the next concept. Sorting is a great activity to help boost phonics understanding. Although, Carol can attest to how much work it is to prepare the sorts and keep them organized. An app is in the process of being designed and we have been told that it should be ready by the end of this year! Here's to hoping this awesome tool comes to the ipad soon!
Here's a glimpse of the pets we have in our room! I remember back to one of the first weeks of school when we made a "How we get to school" bar graph. Their understanding of how to read a graph and compare the data has grown quite a bit! Talking about how many more or how many less people have _____ than _____ can be a tough concept for kids to grasp. After some examples and probing questions, most of then nailed it!
As you all know, we had our second marble jar party on Friday! Earlier in the week, I took their suggestions for how they wanted to celebrate. The suggestions ranged from disco party to swimming pool party. I definitely had to reign in some of their ideas. I tried to push lunch in the classroom with Ms. Yokoyama, but they landed on costume/dress up party. Maybe next time :)
We spent the morning doing some fun stations and then for choice time we settled down to watch some Planet Earth clips and enjoy a fun snack. From the mouth of Ms. Sadie, "This is even better than the last party!" I am glad to hear that they had a good time.

Rainy day recess.... where to start. Kirra was my savior this week with her willingness to get the kids up and moving around. I don't know what I would do without her!
